Situation

Due to recent slope instability and minor rockfall affecting the rail line near Gomshall, the engineering firm Tony Gee and Partners designed a slope and rockfall mitigation strategy.

This formed the second phase on the southern side of the cutting, with an active slope stabilisation on the northern side of the line completed in 2023.

Due to the slope profile above this section of track and existing trees, an active nailed solution, as was used elsewhere on site, was not possible. As a result, a passive rockfall protection system (a rockfall barrier) was chosen.

Description

Part of the solution for this rockfall hazard was the design and installation of a GBE-100A-R rockfall barrier, which was 2 metres high and 48 metres long, adjacent to the tracks. This system was chosen to remove the need to drill up-slope anchors for the fence and therefore minimise the time needed to install on-site.

Due to unknown and potentially problematic ground conditions, anchoring for the fence was uncertain. It was decided that, rather than using wire rope anchors, flexheads and bar anchors in combination were the best option in case anchors had to be drilled deeper than expected.

TRAC Engineering installed the fence over several weeks with on-site assistance from Geobrugg during the build process. Once finished, Geobrugg undertook a final inspection of the completed installation.
