Situation

The steep slopes along Rhigos Road had become increasingly unstable due to the aging hexagonal mesh that was damaged by fire. This left the area vulnerable to rockfall and erosion, creating a serious safety risk for road users. The deteriorating protection system required an urgent and effective solution to restore stability and safeguard the road.

Description

Working closely with Hydrock and Griffiths, Geobrugg developed a tailored solution to stabilise the slope. The attenuators (ATT-40 and ATT-30) installed lower on the slope significantly reduce the mesh and rock bolts needed for stabilisation. This strategic approach increased efficiency, lowered installation time, and reduced costs without compromising safety.

Using the in-house modeling and design tool ATTERO, it was possible to select the most suitable attenuators for Rhigos’s specific rock type, topography, and infrastructure. The combination of precise design and strategic placement has strengthened the slope’s stability, ensuring long-term protection against rockfall and erosion.
