Face of Geobrugg: Helene Lanter, CTO Geobrugg Group

7 Mars 2025

Helene Lanter is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Geobrugg. In this interview, she shares her perspective on innovation, sustainability, and her journey to the role.

My name is Helene Lanter, and I’ve been the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the Geobrugg Group since February 2025. The technology department focuses on product development and innovation across our five key segments: geohazards, coastal erosion, mining, industry, and motorsport. We also handle quality assurance and lead international research projects to support future developments.

As CTO, what is your vision for the future of technology at Geobrugg?
Two things are important to me. First, Geobrugg has built up much knowledge and experience over the years. We can reflect on more than 20 years of practical use in some of our systems. Passing this knowledge on is key.
The second is sustainability. We have many options to improve our environmental impact, such as choosing raw materials, product design, and product lifespan. I want us to do everything we can to contribute to a more sustainable future. While preparing for this interview, I remembered a line from my school yearbook in Athens. A friend had written: “Helene, the future geologist who will save the planet.” Even then, I was sure I would study geology. I'd be proud if my work at Geobrugg helps move things in that direction.

Is there a project you’re particularly proud of?
Yes, the attenuator system. I started as an intern on that project and participated in full-scale testing in Canada. Later, my colleague Remo developed a sound dimensioning system for it. Today, the attenuator system is used in many projects. It’s good to see something continue that you helped develop from the beginning.

What does work-life balance mean to you?
For me, it’s about enjoying what you do. If work motivates you, it’s easier to enjoy your free time. I like spending time with my family, whether in the garden or the mountains.

Do you have a special memory from your time at Geobrugg—or a fun fact your colleagues might not know?
At 17, while living in Greece, I saw my first Geobrugg slope stabilization system—without realizing who was behind it. Years later, during my geology studies, I became interested in natural hazards and attended a conference in France. That connection led to a thesis topic, an internship, and my first job at Geobrugg almost 10 years ago.

Thank you, Helene, for this insightful interview! We've enjoyed learning more about your role and your inspiring path into the world of natural hazard protection.
