At Castle Beach in Falmouth, Cornwall, a historic gabion slope was showing signs of severe deterioration due to corrosion of the plastic-coated mesh. This led to sections of the slope becoming unstable, resulting in rockfall onto the beach and raising concerns about a wider collapse that could compromise the upper slope and potentially undermine Cliff Road above.
Made ground and gabions
Following site inspections and initial TECCO® G65/3 stainless mesh samples, a soil-nailed stabilization system was selected to secure the slope from the top to the concrete and granite-faced sea wall below. Slope modeling was carried out using the RUVOLUM software to determine the appropriate nail spacing and type based on the specific ground conditions.
TECCO® G65/3 Stainless mesh was installed for long-term slope stabilization, supported by Ischebeck INOX 30/11 self-drilling bars, chosen for their corrosion resistance and efficient installation. To help contain fine material and support regrowth, TECMAT erosion control matting was applied across the slope surface, promoting natural vegetation recovery over time.
