Situation

Malshej Ghat lies in the northern part of the Western Ghats of Deccan Trap, within the Maharashtra Volcanic Provenance characterized by highly dissected terrain with flat summits, mural slopes, serrated ridges, and entrenched valleys. Slope masses are made of basalt rock and its weathered crust (debris/soil).

The rockfall problem occurs in rainy seasons due to induced pore water pressure and reduced strength of the rock masses. About 12 km of the National Highway 222 (Kalyan-Ahmednagar) passes the Malshej Ghat and experiences frequent rockfalls, slope failure due to complex geological conditions, heavy rainfall, and slope geometry.

Description

About 70 meters above the highway road level, an RXE rockfall barrier was installed. The impact absorption energy is 10'000 kJ. Worldwide this barrier is the second with such an impact absorption capacity.

This video shows the dimensions of the strongest rockfall barrier in the world.
